In a stunning display of dominance, the Electric Eagles effortlessly triumphed over the hapless Lithuanian team.
With a stellar performance, Serbia secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Lithuania, maintaining their unbeaten record in opening matches of European qualifying campaigns and further prolonging Lithuania’s woeful run of 11 winless matches in European qualifiers.
Dragan Stojković’s Serbia, looking to bounce back from their disappointing World Cup campaign, started the match against Lithuania with a sense of purpose, highlighted by Dušan Tadić’s early goal, which he converted with aplomb after a delightful cut-back from Filip Kostić.
After Dušan Tadić’s opener, Serbia pushed for a second goal to assert their dominance, but their profligacy in front of goal, as exemplified by Aleksandar Mitrović and Dušan Vlahović’s misses and Andrija Živković’s shot hitting the post, ensured Lithuania were still in the game at half-time.
Lithuania, who had lost their last five away games, needed to make a quick response in the second half, but their hopes were dashed as Serbia extended their lead just eight minutes into the half through a superb goal by Dušan Vlahović, who received a clever pass from Tadić before smashing the ball into the net off the underside of the crossbar.
With a comfortable two-goal cushion, Serbia maintained their stranglehold on possession, but were unable to create clear-cut opportunities as Lithuania struggled to get back into the game, with Arvydas Novikovas coming close to a late consolation, but Serbia held on to secure a well-deserved victory and their fifth consecutive win in home H2Hs.
