SC Freiburg will have it all to do in the second leg against Juventus, after a hard-fought encounter at Allianz Stadium ended in a narrow 1-0 victory for the Italian giants thanks to a stunning strike from Federico Chiesa.

Despite their impressive domestic and continental form this season, Juventus struggled to break down a resolute Freiburg side in the first half of their UEFA Europa League (UEL) round-of-16 tie, with the German outfit holding firm until Diogo Dalot’s late strike gave the Bianconeri a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Schwarzwald-Stadion.

In a must-win game for Juventus, they started strongly and came close to scoring early on through Alvaro Morata, but his shot was saved by the Freiburg keeper. The German side grew into the game and had a chance to take the lead when Vincenzo Grifo’s free-kick hit the crossbar. However, it was Juventus who finally broke the deadlock in the second half, with Federico Bernardeschi scoring the only goal of the game to give his side a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.

In a tight contest, Juventus were made to work for their victory against Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) round-of-16 tie at the Schwarzwald-Stadion. After a goalless first half, Federico Chiesa broke the deadlock early in the second half with a stunning strike, before Freiburg’s Lucas Höler had a goal ruled out for handball. Despite Freiburg pushing for an equalizer, Juventus held on to secure a 1-0 away win, putting them in the driving seat for the second leg.

Despite the loss, Freiburg’s solid defense and determination to fight until the end will serve as positive takeaways as they prepare for the return leg in Germany with hopes of making it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
