‘It’s harsh’ – Eddie Howe defends Nick Pope amid red card controversy!

Newcastle United had a terrible time against Liverpool as a 2-0 loss led to a red card for their keeper, Nick Pope. It has a significant impact as Pope will miss the crucial Carabao Cup final vs Manchester United.

Newcastle’s Misery:

A long ball toĀ  Mohammed Salah saw Pope come out of his box to prevent the Egyptian from scoring. However, misjudged the flight and grabbed the ball with his hands to prevent Salah from racing away.Ā

While it was a clear red card, the Newcastle manager believed it was a bit harsh and should not have been awarded. Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Howe said: “It was probably technically handball but I don’t know the rules on red cards outside the box. For me it was a harsh reaction but I understand if it’s in the rules.ā€Ā

ā€œIt’s harsh for Nick because he’s been magnificent for us and to miss the next game is a huge blow for him. I’ve not had a proper word with him but I’ve seen him and he looks visibly upset. He’s been outstanding for us this season.”

The defeat made Eddie Howe the first manager ever to lose 10 consecutive Premier League meetings against Liverpool, stretching back to his time at Bournemouth.
